{"id":16422,"date":"2024-09-19T09:59:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T07:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/is.ijs.si\/?p=16422"},"modified":"2025-03-26T13:02:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T12:02:29","slug":"linking-course-competences-to-academic-performance-a-pilot-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/is.ijs.si\/?p=16422","title":{"rendered":"Linking course competences to academic performance: a pilot study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Laura Fink and Bojan Cestnik<\/p>\n<p>ABSTRACT<br \/>In this paper, we examine the academic performance of students<br \/>in different courses to determine whether good performance in<br \/>one course is related to good performance in other courses.<br \/>Although certain predictive models emphasize the importance of<br \/>course content for learning success, there are few studies that<br \/>address how student performance in different courses is related<br \/>to similar learning goals and skills. The interrelatedness of<br \/>competences is still extremely under-explored area. This study<br \/>attempts to address this gap by creating a preliminary framework<br \/>that examines how academic performance is related to specific<br \/>skills taught in courses at a higher education institution. We<br \/>examined a set of student grades from nine different courses at<br \/>the faculty from areas such as entrepreneurship, business<br \/>processes, computer technology, mathematics, economics,<br \/>marketing, innovation, English, and finance. We show that<br \/>students with more exam retakes on average reached a lower<br \/>grade rank than the students who only registered for the exam<br \/>once. We used linear regression to show the significance of the<br \/>relationships between student performance in computer<br \/>technology course compared to their achievement in other<br \/>courses. With a correlation matrix coefficient, we measured the<br \/>strength of reciprocal interrelatedness between the grade ranks<br \/>students attained in each of the nine courses. The results of this<br \/>preliminary study indicate possible stronger association between<br \/>academic achievement in courses that have similarities in terms<br \/>of content or focus, such as business administration and<br \/>entrepreneurship (correlation coefficient of 0.58). Further studies<br \/>with detailed comparison of course-specific competences are<br \/>needed for accepting the finding that interrelatedness between<br \/>achievements in courses from similar versus different disciplines<br \/>is stronger.
